Benjamin Shine ("Shiny-B") is a hardened criminal incarcerated for everything from purse-snatching, grand-theft auto, to kidnapping, rape and murder. When his day on death-row comes to an end, he is in purgatory and must make amends for his wrong-doing. However, he is transformed into a beast making helping people a bit more difficult than being an angel. He transforms constantly throughout the books to whatever creature will relate to both the crime he committed before his execution and the case he must solve in reality.
The Colored Doors Series: Shiny B learns that each of the color doors symbolizes something in his life, but full realization doesn't come until nearly the end of each case he must solve. Generally, the colored doors represent actual colors of something related to Shiny B's misguided and unfortunate life. With each novel (and hence each colored door), the metaphors become less obvious, more obscure, and Shiny B must think deeply to remember what each refers to in his former life.
